These are our luxury handcrafted personalised wooden chess boards, part of our new range of beautiful handmade traditional wooden games range.

When it comes to good quality wooden chopping boards for the kitchen, we are in a class of our own. We have been perfecting glueing fine timbers together to create beautiful butcher’s block cutting boards for many years and have now turned our skills into creating magnificent quality chess boards to be enjoyed for many years to come. Making the wooden chess boards:

MakeMeSomethingSpecial’s premium quality engraved wooden chess boards are constructed completely by hand, from scratch, to order in our Hampshire workshop. There are many different wooden chess boards on the market, which are made in a variety of ways. In fact, the finest of these is being made from solid hardwoods instead of thin veneers. Naturally, we have chosen solid hardwoods as our way of construction.

The chess squares are 5mm thick individual precision cut pieces from high-quality solid timber. No laminates are used. We use only the very finest American Black Walnut for our dark squares and good quality Maple for the lighter squares. These timbers are considered very desirable for fine chessboard making. We then repeatedly hand sand and finish each board until silky smooth then seal with Danish Oil.

We lay out each individual chess square into a 35mm thick solid oak board. This ensures high strength and stability, making our chessboard very solid and durable and quite unlike anything else on the market. This also means less chance of cracking or movement.

Board sizes:

Our bespoke wooden chess boards come in three standard sizes. 12”, 18” and 24”

Our 12” (30cm) chess board is perfect for chess pieces with a king the heights of 2 – 3 inches. Our 18” (45cm) chessboard is ideal for a king height of 3 – 4 inches and our largest board, our 24” is ideal for a king height of up to 5 inches. We can also make personalised wooden chess boards to order. If you are wanting a specific size to suit your own chess pieces or would like your chessboard to be constructed from a special exotic timber, we will be happy to discuss your requirements.

Personalised Chess Set:

The personalised wooden chess boards come with your choice of engraved words or lettering, on one side edge included in the price. If you require further engraving, you have the option to personalising the other three remaining faces of your chessboard. Perfect for family names and dates, favourite quotes or special messages, making them a very special gift for friends and family.

On the other hand, the chessboards are ideal for weddings gifts, 5th wedding anniversary gifts, milestone birthday or any other special occasion. You can also add carved symbols like hearts, stars and other engraved motifs like zodiac signs. We can also engrave a secret or personal message for you on the underside of your wooden chessboard, making it that little bit extra special. Something like a reading from your wedding day, a favourite poem or quote, something witty, your family favourite recipe or just something secret you don’t want anyone else to see – but you know it’s there.

Semi-precious Chess Playing Pieces:

You can add our exquisite semi-precious chess playing pieces to your chosen chess playing board. A truly beautifully carved stone chess set making a stunning addition to your chess boards and a joy to handle and play a game with. All 32 pieces are included in the set, split into black and white opposing sides.

12” Chess Board – 3.5cm x 30cm x 30cm – up to 15 characters per side

18” Chess Board – 3.5cm x 45cm x 45cm – up to 20 characters per side

24” Chess Board – 4.5cm x 60cm x 60cm – up to 30 characters per side

I have been looking for a large carving board with channels and a well to catch the meat juices for ages and came across MMSS. I spoke to Ben by phone a week before Christmas and we agreed the design. I assumed delivery would be after Christmas but no Ben assured me I would be carving the turkey on it this year. True to his word the board arrived on Christmas Eve. Ben also suggested an upgrade to dark walnut which I'm really pleased with. The board is exactly as I wanted it and looks stunning the finish is superb. I thought it may look slightly worse for wear after battling with the Turkey but once washed which was easy and re-oiled the board looks as good as the day it arrived. So thank you for great service and a fantastic product.
