No doubt you recognise this figure. This recent commission, a set of engraved wooden reindeer was ordered for a wedding display. The little stand alone wooden reindeer had to do just that – stand up by themselves, even though the details were thin, such as the antlers and legs.19166

Here is the very first one. Rudolph (without the red nose). A solid English oak animal measuring roughly 35mm thick x 200mm tall x 170mm wide. A very beautiful wooden cutout, with a lovely graceful feel. I am particularly proud of the body shape – especially the antlers. These are around 2mm wide at the thinnest point but, due to their depth, are still strong and look great.

And here he is stood up.

A lot of hand finishing went into these pretty little wooden reindeer, each and every gap and crevice had to be smoothed, all by hand, until they were soft to the touch. If you’ve ever oiled a piece to oak before, you will know the grain soaked up the oil like a sponge and then, the grain, if not properly smoothed, will stand up like a wire brush, so we had to us tiny little files and lengths of rolled up sand paper to get these wooden figures ready.

Great shaped antlers. The make of a reindeer, especially Santa’s reindeer. This one is Rudolph, which was engraved on one side in capitals. All nine reindeer were engraved with their name, centred and in proportion.

Generally these commissions become a labour of love. We try to make everything identical as humanly possible.

All nine classic Reindeer: COMET – CUPID – DASHER – DONNER – DANCER – PRANCER – BLITZEN – VIXEN & RUDOLPH.

Very elegant, I must say. Really good quality wooden animals like these are something we have started to do as one of our products.

Here is an example of one of our engraved oak camels we made for a customer with a beautiful engraved poem. Perfect for a child as a Christening gift or new born birthday present.

Though it might look much larger, this wooden animal is exactly the same size as our wooden reindeer. Just less bulk. I would love to see these once they are set up as a table centre piece on the wedding day. We might be lucky enough to receive an image. We will be posting it if it does come through.
