Commemorative Wooden Plaque Awards

We very recently were commissioned to make some very special engraved wooden awards, for The Big Launch, sister company to The Eden Project, Cornwall.

The eight handcrafted wooden award bowls or plaques were for eight carefully selected people, who have made a real effort bringing their communities closer together in connection with the Big Lunch initiative, to be awarded by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.

The Big Lunch, of which Camilla is patron, is an initiative seeking to bring people closer together in the local communities by encouraging people to eat lunch with those in their local communities on this one day a year. Just these few hours can create tighter knit communities, is the philosophy.

Since the first Big Lunch in 2009, the number of participants have increased each year — and last year, 4.83 million people took part in the Big Lunch 2014.

The personalised wooden bowls were handcrafted from our Amish, American White oak in our Surrey Hills workshop. As with our personalised chopping boards, these were constructed from full length super-staves – glued full length pieces, and left to dry over 24hours.

The bowls were then carved and shaped top and bottom, leaving a large flat area for engraved lettering. The personalised lettering also featured carved bunting, in keeping with the street party theme.

The engraved oak plaques featured high rise rounded edges with a matching edge underside. These were shaped by hand over many hours and sanded until super smooth.

The wooden bowls were finished in Superior Danish oil to bring out the woods natural colour and treat the timber. The quality of the finish was second to none, beautifully carved lettering and silky smooth to touch.

Here at Make Me Something Special, we have been asked to make many personalised wooden gifts as awards like personalised plaques, chopping boards and tea light candle holders but never a wooden bowls until now. I have to say these very special looking award plaques are things of beauty and were very enjoyable to make.
