Bespoke Engraved Oak Signs

Bespoke engraved oak made for the village of Little Berkhamsted Village in Hertford.

Three of these mighty bespoke signs were made, one for each main road bringing you into the village.

The handmade sign were nothing like we usually made, apart from being made from solid English Oak and feature engraved lettering, it was the sheer size that made these wooden signs breathtaking. They were made to be very heavy duty to last a good deal of time in their new home in Little Berkhamsted.

The oak posts were a whopping 200mm square, that is 8 inches in old money, weighing about 30KG each. (Just the posts)

From there we create the oak sign plaques that fitted into the posts held in position using good old fashioned Mortice & Tenon joints.

Incredibly strong joint and will not budge once in place. These are a class joinery technique ideal for these kind of bespoke signs.

The engraved signs themselves were 60mm thick (2.5”) That is some thickness! We then carved the lettering as specified by the Parish Council, along with the carved logo of the Little Berkhamsted’s Grade 2 listed Tower.

All in all, the these handmade signs measured around 1.6 meters wide x 1.5 meters tall.

Fantastic carving this. This design was created by Dominic Latham-Koenig from the local landmark showing very simple detail but unmistakable when compared to the listed tower itself.

The lettering also featured something very unique. We carved out the letters as normal and painted them with our usual white acrylic paint, however, we then covered the lettering with a special reflective finish so the lettering would glow once lit by car headlights.
